Mechanism of Action

Exenatide is a 39-amino acid peptide originally isolated from Gila monster saliva that acts as a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It shares 53% homology with human GLP-1 but has significantly longer duration of action due to resistance to DPP-4 degradation. It stimulates glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppresses inappropriately elevated glucagon, slows gastric emptying, promotes satiety via hypothalamic signaling, and protects pancreatic beta cells from apoptosis.
